When are NCEA practice exams?
Each school sets its own practice exam dates, some weeks before the national exams start in November. NZQA's October 2026 newsletter to schools asked those that had just finished practice exams to quality assure the grades and send them to NZQA before the November exams, so most practice exams are over by then. Ask your school for its dates.
| Year | NCEA and NZ Scholarship exams |
|---|---|
| 2026 | Tuesday 10 November to Friday 4 December |
| 2027 | 9 November to 3 December; the full timetable is due in December 2026 |
Do NCEA practice exams count?
Not directly. The credits for external standards come from the end-of-year exam, and a practice exam grade never appears on your Record of Achievement by itself. But practice exams still matter, because they are the main evidence for a derived grade.
NCEA derived grades: when practice exams count
A derived grade replaces an exam result when something outside your control stops you sitting the exam or impairs your performance. NZQA bases it on authentic, standard-specific evidence that your school has quality assured, such as your practice exam for that standard. That is why NZQA asks schools to run practice assessments for external standards during the year.
Who can apply
- Temporary illness immediately before (within a week) or during the exam.
- An arm or hand injury after the end of Term 3, or a change to a long-term condition during or within a week of the exams.
- A significant event after 1 October, such as the death of a parent or sibling, attending a tangi or funeral, a serious accident or weather emergency, or being a victim of a serious crime. It can be after 1 September in exceptional cases.
- Selection by a registered national body to represent New Zealand at an event during the exams. You must apply for pre-approval, which closes a week before exams start.
Medical claims need independent professional evidence, such as from a doctor. You can't get a derived grade for a condition you already have special assessment conditions for.
How it works
- You are the applicant. Your school collects the form, checks it and lodges it with NZQA.
- You never lose out by sitting. If your application is approved and you sat the exam anyway, you get the higher of the two grades.
- Deadline: NZQA's key dates give 18 December 2026 as the last day to submit derived grade applications. No late applications are accepted after results come out in January.
- Whole-school events: if a group of students is affected by one event, such as a school closing after an earthquake or flood, NZQA can apply derived grades at scale, and students don't need to apply.
Are NCEA practice exams harder?
They should be marked to the same standard as the real exam, because the grades must be quality assured before your school sends them to NZQA. A practice grade can still look lower than you expect, because you sit it before you have finished the course and your revision. Read the marks you dropped, not just the grade.
Practice exam results and final grades
Every standard is graded Not Achieved, Achieved, Merit or Excellence. Treat each practice grade as a guide to that standard, then plan what will lift it: Merit usually needs explanations, and Excellence needs ideas linked together or applied to harder problems.
- Certificate endorsement: 50 credits at Merit or Excellence at the level or above.
- Course endorsement: 14 or more credits at Merit or Excellence in one subject in one year, with at least 3 internal and 3 external credits in most subjects.
- The certificate: 60 credits at each level plus the 20-credit literacy and numeracy co-requisite.
How to revise for NCEA practice exams
- Check which standards are in each exam on NZQA's assessment specifications, published for 2027 in October 2026.
- Work through NZQA past exams with their assessment schedules, which show what Achieved, Merit and Excellence answers need.
- Time yourself on single questions first, then on full past papers in the weeks before the exam.
- After each paper, sort lost marks into knowledge you are missing, explanation that stopped short, and slips under time pressure.
Daily papers as short timed NCEA practice
Uni-Sine publishes a free daily paper for each subject below. Each is a short timed paper of 8 questions worth 25 to 35 marks, marked instantly with worked answers. It is not a full NCEA exam, it is marked in marks rather than Achieved, Merit and Excellence, and it is not written by NZQA. The questions are original and cover much, but not all, of each subject, so each subject guide spells out what the paper covers and what it misses.
- Level 1: Maths (guide), Physics, Earth and Space Science (guide), Chemistry and Biology from Chemistry and Biology (guide), Science (guide), Digital Technologies (guide).
- Level 2: Maths (guide), Physics (guide), Chemistry (guide), Biology (guide).
- Level 3: Calculus (guide), Statistics (guide), Physics (guide), Physics: Mechanics (covered in the Level 3 Physics guide), Chemistry (guide), Biology (guide), Digital Technologies (guide).
- Scholarship: Calculus (guide).
- Before NCEA: Year 10 Maths (guide) and Year 10 Science (guide), which have no NZQA exam.
A good routine is one daily paper under timed conditions, a careful look at every mark you dropped, and one NZQA past paper a week as the exams get closer.
