NCEA Level 1 Maths standards
NCEA Level 1 was rebuilt in 2024 with fewer, larger standards. These are the four Level 1 Mathematics and Statistics achievement standards:
| Standard | Title | Credits | Assessed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 91944 | Explore data using a statistical enquiry process | 5 | Internal |
| 91945 | Use mathematical methods to explore problems that relate to life in Aotearoa New Zealand or the Pacific | 5 | Internal |
| 91946 | Interpret and apply mathematical and statistical information in context | 5 | External |
| 91947 | Demonstrate mathematical reasoning | 5 | External |
The numeracy co-requisite is separate. It is its own standard, 32406, sat as a digital common assessment activity during the year (in 2027, 10 to 21 May and 6 to 17 September), and you need it, along with literacy, for any level of NCEA.
The NCEA Level 1 Maths exam
| Year | Exam | Date |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | Level 1 Mathematics and Statistics (91946, 91947) | Tuesday 10 November, morning |
| 2027 | All NCEA and Scholarship exams | 9 November to 3 December; subject dates due December 2026 |
NZQA's 2027 assessment specifications say both externals are sat on printed paper in the end-of-year exam. You must bring a ruler and an approved calculator. For 91947 a formula sheet is provided.
91946: interpreting information in context
You get a resource booklet of data representations, such as infographics, displays and media articles, and a question booklet with three questions. The questions ask you to identify information, relate findings to the evidence, and critically engage with the quality, validity and limitations of what is presented. The resources are not released before the exam.
91947: mathematical reasoning
Three questions in which you explain, with reasoning, how to work through problems. They come from:
- Number and algebra: simplifying expressions, generalising properties of numbers, inequations, linear and quadratic equations, simultaneous linear equations, optimal solutions, linking graphs, tables, equations and patterns, and relating rate of change to gradient.
- Measurement, geometry and space: Pythagoras and trigonometric ratios in right-angled triangles in 2D and 3D, similar shapes, surface area of prisms, pyramids, cones and spheres, and volume of pyramids, cones, spheres and composite shapes.
Worked examples
Simultaneous equations
Solve 2x + y = 11 and x − y = 1. Adding the equations removes y: 3x = 12, so x = 4, and then y = 4 − 1 = 3. Check in the first equation: 2 × 4 + 3 = 11. Writing that check is the kind of step that supports a Merit answer.
Trigonometry in a right-angled triangle
A 5.0 m ladder leans against a wall at 70° to the ground. How high up the wall does it reach?

Grades, credits and endorsements
Every NCEA standard is graded Not Achieved, Achieved, Merit or Excellence, and earns its credits at whatever grade you reach. Achieved shows you meet the standard, Merit shows deeper understanding, and Excellence shows it applied to harder, unfamiliar problems.
- The certificate: NCEA Level 1 needs 60 credits at Level 1 or above, plus the 20-credit literacy and numeracy co-requisite, which you can gain any time before you leave school. Since 2024 you can no longer carry 20 credits over from the level below.
- Certificate endorsement: 50 credits at Merit or better gives a Merit endorsement; 50 at Excellence gives an Excellence endorsement.
- Course endorsement: 14 or more credits at Merit or Excellence in one subject in one year, with at least 3 from internal and 3 from external standards in most subjects.
Use the daily paper as a practice exam
Uni-Sine publishes a free daily paper on the NCEA Level 1 Maths track. It is a short timed paper: 8 questions worth 25 to 35 marks, marked instantly, with worked answers. It is not a full NCEA exam and it is not written by NZQA, so treat it as a quick daily practice test alongside NZQA's past papers.
- What it covers well: quadratic and simultaneous equations, inequalities, straight-line and quadratic graphs, Pythagoras and trigonometry, similarity and proportion, which together match much of the algebra and geometry in 91947.
- What it does not cover: the reading of real infographics and media articles that 91946 needs, surface area and volume, and the internals. It also includes circle theorems and vectors, which 91947 does not list, so treat those as extension.
A good routine is one daily paper under timed conditions, then a careful look at every mark you dropped, then one NZQA past paper a week in the weeks before the exam.
NCEA changes for 2026, 2027 and beyond
NCEA still applies in 2026 and 2027, so the standards on this page are the ones you will sit. In 2028, Year 11 moves to a new foundational award focused on reading, writing and maths, and NCEA Level 1 ends. The Government agreed the structure of the new qualification system on 26 March 2026, and the Ministry of Education confirmed further details and the timeline on 16 May 2026.
Common mistakes in NCEA Level 1 Maths
- Giving an answer without reasoning. 91947 is about explaining how you worked it out, so show each step and say why.
- Ignoring the context in 91946. Every answer should refer to the data and the situation, not just a number.
- Calculator in the wrong mode. Trigonometry here is in degrees.
- Forgetting units. Areas are squared units and volumes are cubed units.
