What is NZ Scholarship Calculus?
New Zealand Scholarship is an NZQA award that recognises top secondary school students in each subject. Students who reach the cut score receive Scholarship, and the very top students receive Outstanding Scholarship. You enter through your school, there is no charge for domestic students, and you do not have to be working towards NCEA to enter. Not every school enters students, so ask your calculus teacher.
NZQA limits the number of Scholarships in a subject to around 3% of the students with 14 or more Level 3 credits in that subject. In 2025, Calculus had 346 Scholarships and 41 Outstanding Scholarships, 2.95% of a cohort of 13,102.
The Scholarship Calculus exam
| Year | Exam | Date |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | Scholarship Calculus (93202) | Wednesday 25 November, morning |
| 2027 | All NCEA and Scholarship exams | 9 November to 3 December; subject dates due December 2026 |
NZQA's 2026 assessment specifications, published in October 2025, describe the paper:
- Four questions, set in patterns and relationships, equations and expressions, and calculus at Levels 7 and 8, drawing on any Level 8 mathematics achievement objective (M8-1 to M8-12).
- Mixed and unfamiliar: one question can combine areas, and contexts can be mathematical or real-life, with any information you need supplied.
- Exact answers: often required, such as surds or algebraic forms. Show all relevant working; minor rounding errors are not penalised.
- Written parts: some part-questions ask you to compare or discuss models, procedures or techniques, their uses, benefits and limitations.
- Calculators: an approved graphics or CAS calculator is advised, but CAS answers need every command shown, and correct answers alone are not enough.
- Resources: NZQA provides its Calculus Formulae and Tables booklet.
NZQA's Scholarship Calculus page has past exams with assessment schedules, and the assessment reports describe what top answers did.
Scholarship monetary awards
Scholarship results can lead to money for tertiary study at an approved New Zealand provider. NZQA lists these awards for 2025 results:
| Award | Value | 2025 recipients |
|---|---|---|
| Premier Award | $10,000 a year for three years | 13 |
| Outstanding Scholar Award | $5,000 a year for three years | 57 |
| Scholarship Award | $2,000 a year for three years | 331 |
| Single Subject Award | $500 per subject for 1 or 2 Scholarships, up to $1,000 | 2,325 |
The multi-year awards depend on how many Scholarships and Outstanding Scholarships you gain across subjects in one year, and you must keep at least a B grade average in your tertiary study each year. Payment can be deferred for up to four years.
Worked examples at Scholarship level
Complex roots of a polynomial
Given that 2 + i is a root of z³ − 5z² + 9z − 5 = 0, find the other roots. The coefficients are real, so 2 − i is also a root, and the two together give a quadratic factor:
Dividing, z³ − 5z² + 9z − 5 = (z² − 4z + 5)(z − 1), so the roots are 2 + i, 2 − i and 1. Check: the roots add to 5, matching the coefficient of z².
A differential equation model
A drink cools in a 20 °C room according to dT/dt = −k(T − 20). It starts at 90 °C and is 60 °C after 10 minutes. Separating and integrating gives T = 20 + 70e^(−kt). From 60 = 20 + 70e^(−10k):
It reaches 30 °C when 70e^(−kt) = 10, so t = ln 7 ÷ k ≈ 34.8 minutes. A Scholarship answer would also discuss the model's limits, for example that the room temperature is assumed constant.
An exact definite integral
Using sin²x = ½(1 − cos 2x):
Leave it as π/4: the exact form is what the specifications ask for.

Use the daily papers for Scholarship practice
Uni-Sine publishes a free daily paper on the Scholarship Calculus track. It is a short timed paper: 8 questions worth 25 to 35 marks, marked instantly, with worked answers. It is not a Scholarship exam and it is not written by NZQA, so use it to keep your technique sharp alongside NZQA's past Scholarship papers.
- What it covers well: complex numbers and Argand diagrams, roots of polynomials, volumes of revolution and differential equations, which are all demanding Level 8 algebra and calculus.
- What it does not cover: the long, multi-part Scholarship questions in unfamiliar contexts, or written discussion of models. It also includes matrices, hyperbolic functions, polar coordinates, proof by induction and Maclaurin series, which go beyond NZ Level 3 calculus but are good stretch practice.
For the core Level 3 skills, the NCEA Level 3 Calculus daily paper is a good warm-up, and our NCEA Level 3 Calculus guide covers the standards Scholarship builds on.
How to prepare for Scholarship Calculus
- Secure Level 3 Excellence first. Scholarship questions build on the Level 3 calculus externals, then push further.
- Work full past papers. Scholarship rewards sustained reasoning over several linked parts.
- Practise without CAS. You must show every step, so be fluent by hand.
- Write about models. Practise short explanations of why a method works and where a model breaks down.
Changes ahead
Scholarship runs as usual in 2026 and 2027. On 26 March 2026 the Government agreed to replace NCEA, and the Ministry of Education's timeline, confirmed on 16 May 2026, replaces NCEA Level 3 with the New Zealand Advanced Certificate of Education in 2030.
