That is 12 external credits and up to 17 internal credits, depending on what your school offers. NZQA's past exams and assessment schedules are on its Biology past exams page.
The NCEA Level 2 Biology exam
| Year | Exam | Date |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | Level 2 Biology (91156, 91157, 91159) | Friday 20 November, morning |
| 2027 | All NCEA and Scholarship exams | 9 November to 3 December; subject dates due December 2026 |
NZQA's 2027 assessment specifications say the exam is on printed paper, and you may need to interpret diagrams and new information, draw diagrams and write answers of one or more paragraphs. Some questions are based on a resource, and annotated diagrams can be used as evidence.
What each external covers
Life processes at the cellular level (91156)
Photosynthesis, respiration and cell division, including DNA replication and mitosis, linked to the movement of materials by diffusion, osmosis and active transport, enzyme activity, and the factors that affect each process.
Genetic variation and change (91157)
Mutation as a source of new alleles; independent assortment, segregation and crossing over in meiosis; monohybrid crosses showing co-dominance, incomplete dominance, lethal alleles and multiple alleles; dihybrid crosses, including linked genes; and the factors that change allele frequencies in a gene pool, such as natural selection.
Gene expression (91159)
The structure of DNA and RNA, complementary base pairing, coding and template strands, the genetic code with its triplets, codons and anticodons and its redundancy, how proteins are made from DNA through mRNA, and the structural and catalytic roles of proteins.
Worked examples
Genetic variation: co-dominance
In cattle, red and white coat colour are co-dominant, and the heterozygote is roan. Crossing two roan cattle gives offspring in a 1 : 2 : 1 ratio: 25% red, 50% roan and 25% white. A Merit or Excellence answer explains why: each parent passes on one of its two alleles with equal chance, and in co-dominance both alleles show in the heterozygote.
Genetic variation: a dihybrid cross
Crossing two plants heterozygous for two unlinked genes with complete dominance gives the classic 9 : 3 : 3 : 1 ratio of phenotypes. If the genes are linked, the ratio changes, because the alleles tend to be inherited together unless crossing over separates them.
Gene expression: from DNA to protein
A section of template DNA reads TAC GGA. Its mRNA is AUG CCU, the tRNA anticodons are UAC and GGA, and the codons code for methionine then proline. Because the code is redundant, a change to the third base of a codon often leaves the amino acid unchanged.

Grades, credits and endorsements
Every NCEA standard is graded Not Achieved, Achieved, Merit or Excellence, and earns its credits at whatever grade you reach. Achieved shows you meet the standard, Merit shows deeper understanding, and Excellence shows it applied to harder, unfamiliar problems.
- The certificate: NCEA Level 2 needs 60 credits at Level 2 or above, plus the 20-credit literacy and numeracy co-requisite, which you can gain any time before you leave school. Since 2024 you can no longer carry 20 credits over from the level below.
- Certificate endorsement: 50 credits at Merit or better gives a Merit endorsement; 50 at Excellence gives an Excellence endorsement.
- Course endorsement: 14 or more credits at Merit or Excellence in one subject in one year, with at least 3 from internal and 3 from external standards in most subjects.
Use the daily paper as a practice exam
Uni-Sine publishes a free daily paper on the NCEA Level 2 Biology track. It is a short timed paper: 8 questions worth 25 to 35 marks, marked instantly, with worked answers. It is not a full NCEA exam and it is not written by NZQA, so treat it as a quick daily practice test alongside NZQA's past papers.
- What it covers well: cell structure, membranes and transport, enzymes, DNA replication and mitosis, nucleic acids and protein synthesis, which support 91156 and 91159.
- What it does not cover: photosynthesis and respiration in detail, inheritance crosses and allele frequencies for 91157, and the internals. It also includes gas exchange, mass transport, the immune system and classification, which are not NCEA Level 2 externals.
A good routine is one daily paper under timed conditions, then a careful look at every mark you dropped, then one NZQA past paper a week in the weeks before the exam.
NCEA changes for 2026, 2027 and beyond
NCEA still applies in 2026 and 2027, so the standards on this page are the ones you will sit. New Level 2 standards are due to be fully in place by 2028, and in 2029 a new New Zealand Certificate of Education (NZCE) replaces NCEA Level 2 for Year 12. The Government agreed the structure of the new qualification system on 26 March 2026, and the Ministry of Education confirmed further details and the timeline on 16 May 2026.
Common mistakes in NCEA Level 2 Biology
- Describing instead of explaining. Merit and Excellence need the how and why, linked to the context in the question.
- Mixing up co-dominance and incomplete dominance. In co-dominance both alleles show; in incomplete dominance the heterozygote is a blend.
- Confusing the template and coding strands. mRNA is complementary to the template strand and matches the coding strand, with U for T.
- Ignoring the resource. Use the data or diagram given; generic answers rarely reach Excellence.
