Is there a Year 10 Maths exam?
Not a national one. NCEA starts in Year 11, so Year 10 Maths is assessed by your school in whatever way it chooses, such as topic tests or an end-of-year exam. The results go in your school report, not your NCEA record. They still matter: your teachers may use them when you choose Year 11 courses, and they show what to fix before NCEA.
What Year 10 Maths leads to in Year 11
NCEA Level 1 Mathematics and Statistics has four achievement standards worth 5 credits each:
| Standard | Title | Assessed |
|---|---|---|
| 91944 | Explore data using a statistical enquiry process | Internal |
| 91945 | Use mathematical methods to explore problems that relate to life in Aotearoa New Zealand or the Pacific | Internal |
| 91946 | Interpret and apply mathematical and statistical information in context | External |
| 91947 | Demonstrate mathematical reasoning | External |
For 2027, NZQA's assessment specifications say 91947 covers algebra (expressions, linear and quadratic equations, simultaneous equations, inequations, patterns and graphs, gradient as a rate of change) and measurement (Pythagoras, trigonometry, similar shapes, surface area and volume). 91946 asks you to read and judge infographics, statistical displays and media articles. Our NCEA Level 1 Maths guide has the full detail.
Year 10 topics that matter most
- Algebra: simplifying, expanding, solving linear equations and rearranging formulas are the base of 91947.
- Graphs: plotting straight lines and reading gradient and intercept lead into patterns, graphs and rates of change.
- Measurement and geometry: area, perimeter, angles, Pythagoras and similar shapes lead into the measurement half of 91947.
- Statistics: averages, charts and describing data lead into 91946 and the statistical enquiry internal 91944.
- Number: fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, money and units are what the numeracy co-requisite tests.
The numeracy co-requisite
Every NCEA certificate currently needs 10 numeracy credits and 10 literacy credits. Numeracy is its own standard, 32406, assessed digitally. NZQA says students can be assessed from Year 9 to Year 13, so some schools enter Year 10 students when they are ready. In 2027 the assessment windows run from 10 to 21 May and from 6 to 17 September. Ask your school whether and when it will enter you.
Changes for Year 10 in 2026 and 2027
On 26 March 2026 the Government agreed to replace NCEA with a new qualification system, and the Ministry of Education confirmed the timeline on 16 May 2026. Mathematics is one of the subjects every Year 11 student will be required to study.
| Year | What happens |
|---|---|
| 2027 | New Year 10 curriculum required in schools; NCEA Level 1 runs for Year 11 |
| 2028 | New Year 11 curriculum; Foundational Award introduced; NCEA Level 1 removed |
| 2029 | New Zealand Certificate of Education (NZCE) introduced for Year 12 |
| 2030 | New Zealand Advanced Certificate of Education (NZACE) introduced for Year 13 |
Worked examples at Year 10 level
Number: a percentage discount
A jacket costs $80 and is reduced by 15%. Paying 85% of the price is quickest: 80 × 0.85 = $68.
Algebra: solving a linear equation
Check by substituting: 3 × 6 + 7 = 25, so x = 6 is right.
Graphs: reading a straight line
For y = 3x − 4, where x and y are just numbers, the gradient is 3, so y goes up by 3 each time x goes up by one, and the line crosses the y-axis at −4. When x = 3, y = 3 × 3 − 4 = 5.
Statistics: mean, median and mode
For the data 3, 8, 8, 11, 15: the mean is 45 ÷ 5 = 9, the median (middle value) is 8, and the mode (most common) is 8. The mean is pulled up by the 15, which is why the median is often the better summary when there is an unusually large value.

Daily Year 10 Maths practice papers
Uni-Sine publishes a free daily paper on the Year 10 Maths track. It is a short timed paper of 8 questions worth 25 to 35 marks, marked instantly, with worked answers. It is not set by your school or NZQA, so use it for regular practice rather than as a copy of your school exam.
- What it covers well: fractions, decimals and percentages, ratio and proportion, money and units, expressions and simple equations, sequences, coordinates and straight-line graphs, angles, area and perimeter, averages and charts, and probability.
- What it does not cover: Pythagoras and trigonometry, surface area and volume, quadratics and simultaneous equations, and reading infographics in depth, which all come up at NCEA Level 1.
How to get ready for Year 11 maths
- Make algebra automatic. Expanding, factorising simple expressions and solving equations save time everywhere.
- Show your reasoning. NCEA rewards clear working and explaining what your answer means in context.
- Use a calculator well. Know your approved calculator, including brackets, powers and the fraction key.
- Read graphs and data in the news. It is the skill 91946 tests.
