States of Matter Simulator
Hundreds of particles interact through a real attraction in a box under a weighted lid, which keeps the pressure steady. Nothing is scripted: the crystal melts, the liquid boils and the lid rises because of how the particles move, and the plateaus of the heating curve come out of the simulation. Turn the heater down and it condenses and freezes again.
What you can do
- Five substances: water, nitrogen, oxygen, ethanol and mercury, with real melting and boiling points
- A heating curve that draws itself as you heat or cool
- Solid, liquid and gas starting points
- Particles coloured by what they are doing: in a lattice, liquid-like or gas-like
- Practice questions on states, plateaus and the energy to melt or boil a mass
