Molecule Builder
Build any molecule atom by atom, from methane to octane, ethene, ethanol or benzene, with branches, rings and multiple bonds. The tool checks each atom against the octet rule, works out lone pairs and formal charges, and gives a clear stable or unstable verdict with the reason shown on the atom at fault. The checks are the rules of Lewis structures, plus a few stated rules of thumb for strain and weak bonds.
What you can do
- Chains, branches and rings, with single, double and triple bonds, up to 64 atoms
- Quick starts from methane to octane, ethene, ethanol, benzene and the classic VSEPR shapes
- A stable or unstable verdict with the reason shown on the atom at fault
- Valence and octet per atom, formal charges, degree of unsaturation and the molecular formula
- Total bond enthalpy from data-booklet values, and the VSEPR shape at every centre
- Bond angles and a dipole arrow on a 3D model you turn with a finger, the mouse or the arrow keys
- Practice questions on shapes, lone pairs and unsaturation
