What is a symmetry?

Turn and flip a numbered square; the run of moves adds up to one symmetry and the table of combinations fills in.

A symmetry is a move that leaves a shape looking exactly as it did. Turn a square a quarter of the way round and it fits back into its own outline.

The numbers on the corners show which move you made. A square has exactly eight symmetries: four turns and four flips.

One symmetry followed by another always gives a third symmetry. Group theory is the study of how moves like these combine.
