What is a black hole?

Light rays fired past a black hole at a fan of aims, traced with the photon orbit equation: far rays bend, closer ones swing round, one loops the photon sphere and rays inside 2.6 r_s fall in. Then the learner drags the aim of their own ray.

A black hole is a place where gravity is so strong that nothing can get out, not even light. Its edge is called the event horizon.

Far away, a black hole only bends passing light a little. Close in, light swings right round it or falls in for good.

This course covers how black holes form, what happens near one, and how we found them. It also says plainly what nobody knows yet.
