SAT Math practice questions with answers, and how the section works
Geometry, Algebra 2 & SAT Math
Start today's paperPaper resets in
The daily Geometry, Algebra 2 and SAT Math paper is a short timed practice test of 8 original questions. It covers much of SAT Math: linear equations, systems and inequalities, quadratics, exponents, proportion, probability, data and right-triangle trigonometry. It also has circle theorems and vectors, which the SAT doesn't test in that form. Its questions are written-answer, not multiple choice, so it builds the working behind your answers rather than test-taking speed.
Where to find official SAT Math practice questions
- Full-length practice tests in Bluebook: College Board's free adaptive practice tests work exactly like the real digital SAT. Paper versions (not adaptive) are also available as PDFs, recommended for students who test on paper with accommodations.
- The Student Question Bank: thousands of official practice questions written by the people who write the SAT. You can filter by test, domain, skill and difficulty, so it is the fastest way to drill one weak area.
- Khan Academy: College Board's practice pages point students to it for free SAT practice.
- A short daily practice test: the paper above, for 35 to 40 minutes of mixed algebra, data and geometry practice.
SAT Math format: modules, timing and question types
| Part | Questions | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Math module 1 | 22 | 35 minutes |
| Math module 2 | 22 | 35 minutes |
| Math section total | 44 | 70 minutes |
| Whole SAT (with Reading and Writing) | 98 | 2 hours 14 minutes, plus a 10-minute break |
- It adapts: module 1 mixes easy, medium and hard questions. How you do on it decides whether module 2 is harder or easier.
- Easiest first: within each module, questions run from easiest to hardest.
- Two answer types: about 75% of questions are 4-option multiple choice. The rest are student-produced responses, where you type your own answer. Some of those have more than one correct answer, but you only enter one.
- Calculator throughout: Bluebook has a Desmos calculator you can switch between graphing and scientific, or you can bring an approved handheld calculator without CAS.
- Context: about 30% of the questions are set in a real-world context.
That is about 1.6 minutes per question on average. The early questions take less, which saves time for the hard ones at the end of each module.
What SAT Math tests: the 4 domains
| Domain | Questions | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Algebra | 13 to 15 | Linear equations in 1 and 2 variables, linear functions, systems of 2 linear equations, linear inequalities |
| Advanced Math | 13 to 15 | Equivalent expressions, nonlinear equations in 1 variable, systems of equations in 2 variables, nonlinear functions |
| Problem-Solving and Data Analysis | 5 to 7 | Ratios, rates and units, percentages, one- and two-variable data, probability, sample statistics and margin of error, statistical claims |
| Geometry and Trigonometry | 5 to 7 | Area and volume, lines, angles and triangles, right triangles and trigonometry, circles |
Algebra and Advanced Math make up most of the section, so they repay practice first. Advanced Math covers absolute value, quadratic, exponential, polynomial, rational and radical equations.
10 SAT Math practice questions
We wrote these for this page, in the style of the digital SAT. Questions marked SPR need you to type your own answer. Try them all in 16 minutes, the real pace, then check the answers below.

SAT Math practice question answers
Algebra (questions 1 to 3)
1. Answer: 24. 4x − 2x = 9 + 7, so 2x = 16 and x = 8. The question asks for 3x, which is 24. Answering 8 is the classic trap: always reread what the question asks for.
2. Answer: B. The $25 is charged every month, so it multiplies m. The $40 is paid once, so it is the constant: C = 25m + 40. After a year that is 25(12) + 40 = $340.
3. Answer: 11. Substitute the first equation into the second: 2x + 3x − 5 = 15, so 5x = 20 and x = 4. Then y = 3(4) − 5 = 7, and x + y = 11. In Desmos, graph both lines and click the point where they cross: (4, 7). The Simultaneous Equations Solver shows the algebra.

Advanced Math (questions 4 and 5)
4. Answer: A. The discriminant tells you how many real solutions a quadratic has.
A discriminant below zero means the equation has no real roots. You can see it on the graph: the parabola's lowest point is (−2, 3), above the x-axis, so it never crosses.
Here x is the input and y is the value of x² + 4x + 7.
5. Answer: B. Multiplying by 0.8 each year keeps 80% of the value, so it loses 20% a year. It was bought for f(0) = $500, and the loss isn't a fixed $80: after 2 years the value is 500(0.8)² = $320.
Problem-Solving and Data Analysis (questions 6 to 8)
6. Answer: C. A 20% cut multiplies by 0.8, and a 25% rise multiplies by 1.25. Since 0.8 × 1.25 = 1, the final price equals the original. Adding −20% and +25% to get +5% is the trap.
7. Answer: 0.375, or 3/8. The student is already known to play a sport, so the 120 sport players are the whole group: 45 ÷ 120 = 0.375. Dividing by all 200 students answers a different question.
8. Answer: 18. Work with totals, not means. Five numbers with mean 12 add to 60. Six with mean 13 add to 78. The new number is 78 − 60 = 18.
Geometry and Trigonometry (questions 9 and 10)
9. Answer: 5. Complete the square in x and in y: x² − 6x becomes (x − 3)² − 9, and y² + 8y becomes (y + 4)² − 16. So (x − 3)² + (y + 4)² = 25, a circle with center (3, −4) and radius √25 = 5.
10. Answer: B. A and B add up to 90°, and the sine of an angle equals the cosine of its complement. So cos B = sin A = 0.6. No calculation is needed once you spot this. The Trigonometry Calculator lets you check the ratios on any right triangle.
SAT Math scores
SAT Math is scored from 200 to 800, the same as Reading and Writing, and the two add up to a total from 400 to 1600. College Board's college and career readiness benchmark for Math is 530: a score from 530 to 800 meets or exceeds it, and 510 to 520 is approaching it. Your score report also shows a score range, because scores would vary a little on a different test day.

Use the daily paper as a short SAT Math practice test
- Open today's Geometry, Algebra 2 and SAT Math paper and set the suggested time, 35 to 40 minutes.
- Use Desmos or your SAT calculator, so the tool feels automatic by test day.
- Write full working. Most SAT mistakes come from misreading or a slip, and written steps make them easy to find.
- Mark it, sort each lost mark into one of the four SAT domains, then drill that domain in the Student Question Bank.
Common SAT Math mistakes
- Answering for x when the question asks for 3x or x + y. Underline what is being asked.
- Adding percent changes: multiply the factors instead, as in question 6.
- Using the wrong total in probability: "given that" shrinks the group you divide by.
- Spending too long early: module questions get harder, so bank time on the first ones.
- Ignoring Desmos: graphing a system or a quadratic is often faster and catches algebra slips.
- Not checking the context: about 30% of questions are set in the real world, so ask whether your answer makes sense, such as a price that can't be negative.
