9th grade integrated science practice test: free questions with answers

Paper resets in

The daily Grade 9 Integrated Science paper has 8 original questions worth 25 to 35 marks, mixing physics, chemistry and biology. Its physics and chemistry questions cover forces and momentum, electricity and magnetism, energy changes and rates, quantities in chemistry and atomic structure. Its biology questions, on cells, bioenergetics, inheritance and evolution, suit integrated courses that include biology, and the organic chemistry goes further than most 9th grade courses.

What 9th grade integrated science covers

There is no single national 9th grade course. In Texas, for example, Integrated Physics and Chemistry (IPC) is a one-credit course recommended for grades 9 and 10. The state's standards build it around four topics:

  • Force and motion: motion, mass and acceleration, momentum and impulse, and how gravitational and electric forces depend on mass, charge and distance.
  • Energy: circuits, energy conservation and transfer, thermal energy, waves, and renewable and nonrenewable sources.
  • Structure of matter: atomic structure, the periodic table, and what affects reaction rates.
  • Changes in matter: signs of a chemical reaction, balancing equations and nuclear reactions.

Other states' integrated courses cover similar physical science, often with biology or Earth science added. Ask your teacher for the course outline.

Free 9th grade science practice test: 6 questions

We wrote these questions for this page. Give yourself 20 minutes with a calculator.

  1. A 0.15 kg ball moving at 20 m/s is caught and stopped in 0.050 s. What impulse acts on it, and what is the average force?
  2. Two charged balls are moved twice as far apart. What happens to the electric force between them?
  3. An electric motor takes in 500 J and gives out 350 J of useful kinetic energy. What is its efficiency, and where does the rest go?
  4. A lamp draws 0.50 A from a 120 V supply. What is its power?
  5. Balance: CH₄ + O₂ → CO₂ + H₂O
  6. Why does powdered chalk react with acid faster than a lump of the same mass?

Practice test answers

1. 3.0 N s, and 60 N. The impulse equals the change in momentum: 0.15 × 20 = 3.0 kg m/s, which is 3.0 N s. The average force is impulse ÷ time = 3.0 ÷ 0.050 = 60 N. Moving your hands back as you catch makes the time longer and the force smaller. Try an impulse question from our Laws of Motion course, then press Mark.

Find a force, time or change in momentum using Ft = Δp.

Press Mark to have your answer marked in the Laws of Motion course.

2. It falls to a quarter. Electric and gravitational forces follow an inverse square law: double the distance and the force is divided by 2², which is 4. The Electric Force Calculator shows this.

3. 70%. Efficiency = useful output ÷ total input = 350 ÷ 500 = 0.70. The other 150 J isn't destroyed: it is transferred to the surroundings, mostly as heat and sound.

4. 60 W. Power = voltage × current = 120 × 0.50 = 60 W. Explore circuits in the Circuit Builder.

5. CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O. Start with carbon, which already balances. Hydrogen comes next: four atoms on the left need 2H₂O. Then oxygen: the right side now has 4 oxygen atoms, so put 2O₂ on the left. Check with the Equation Balancer.

6. Powder has a much larger surface area for the same mass, so more acid particles can collide with it at once. More collisions each second means a faster reaction.

Use the daily paper as a short timed practice test

  1. Open today's Grade 9 Integrated Science paper and work to the suggested time, 30 to 35 minutes.
  2. Skip the biology or organic chemistry questions if your course doesn't include them.
  3. Mark it with the mark scheme and note the topic behind each lost mark.
  4. Go deeper with the physics and chemistry practice tests.

Common mistakes

  • Halving a force when the distance doubles: inverse square means a quarter.
  • Saying wasted energy is lost or destroyed: it is transferred to the surroundings.
  • Changing subscripts to balance an equation: change only the numbers in front.
  • Giving efficiency over 100%: useful output can't be more than the input.

Common questions

What science do you take in 9th grade?
It depends on your state and school. Common choices are biology, physical science, or an integrated course such as Texas's Integrated Physics and Chemistry, which is recommended for grades 9 and 10.
What is IPC?
Integrated Physics and Chemistry, a one-credit Texas course built around force, motion, energy and matter.
Are these questions from a real test?
No. The questions on this page and our daily papers are original.
