GCSE Chemistry mock paper: a free short timed mock at Higher or Foundation

What today's chemistry mock paper is

Each paper has 8 questions, each on a different topic, worth 25 to 35 marks in total. The suggested time is about 1.1 minutes a mark, close to the real exams' pace, so most papers take 30 to 40 minutes. A calculator is allowed. The questions are original, in the style of the exam boards, not past papers or official papers.

When you finish, it is marked on screen straight away against its mark scheme, part by part. You can also print it with the mark scheme. Sitting the paper is free; marking and printing come with a Uni-Sine plan.

How it compares with the real GCSE Chemistry papers

With every board, GCSE Chemistry is two papers, both at the same tier. Foundation leads to grades 1 to 5 and Higher to grades 4 to 9 (AQA).

Exam boardPapersMarks per paperTime per paper
AQA (8462)21001 hour 45 minutes
Edexcel (1CH0)21001 hour 45 minutes
OCR Gateway (J248)2901 hour 45 minutes
OCR Twenty First Century (J258)2901 hour 45 minutes

Figures from the specifications of AQA, Edexcel and OCR (Gateway and Twenty First Century). A daily paper is about a third of one real paper: it trains your pace without taking a whole morning.

What the chemistry mock covers

  • Higher: atomic structure and isotopes, bonding and structure, moles and reacting masses, concentration and titration, electrolysis, energy changes, rates, equilibrium, organic chemistry, chemical analysis, the atmosphere, using resources, and acids and reactivity.
  • Foundation: atomic structure, the periodic table, ionic and covalent bonding, states of matter, acids, alkalis and salts, separating mixtures, rates of reaction, crude oil and fuels, the atmosphere, energy changes, electrolysis, chemical analysis and using resources.

Every paper mixes topics from both halves of the course. On AQA, Paper 1 is topics 1 to 5, from atomic structure to energy changes, and Paper 2 is topics 6 to 10, from rates of reaction to using resources. Exam dates, grade boundaries and the equations to learn are in the GCSE Chemistry guide.

How to sit it as a GCSE chemistry mock exam

  1. Pick your tier: the one you expect to be entered for.
  2. Clear the desk: a pen, a pencil, a ruler, a calculator and a periodic table for relative atomic masses.
  3. Start the timer and don't pause it. Answer every part and show your working: method marks count even when the final answer slips.
  4. Read the mark scheme for every part where you dropped marks. Check your equations balance and your answers have units.
  5. Sort each lost mark into didn't know it, slipped, or ran out of time, and fix the biggest pile first. That list is your chemistry mock revision plan.

Check relative formula masses with the Molar Mass Calculator and reacting masses with the Stoichiometry Calculator. Revise with the Atomic Structure and Chemical Bonding courses.

Free GCSE chemistry mock and past papers

For a full-length mock, use the boards' own past papers and mark schemes, free from AQA, Edexcel and OCR. Pearson keeps its newest papers for teachers only, so your school's chemistry mock may be a paper you can't find online. For when mocks happen and whether they count, see the GCSE mocks guide.

Common questions

Is this a real GCSE chemistry mock exam?
No. It is a short timed mock of 8 original questions, not an exam board paper. A real GCSE Chemistry paper lasts 1 hour 45 minutes.
How should I revise for a chemistry mock?
Ask which topics are in, then test yourself instead of rereading notes. Practise the calculations, revise the required practicals, and sit a short timed paper each day.
What is in a Year 10 chemistry mock?
Only what you have been taught so far, so ask your teacher which topics are in. If it is AQA Paper 1, that means topics 1 to 5, from atomic structure to energy changes.
