A-level Biology exam boards and specifications
Your school chooses the board and the specification, so ask your teacher which one you are on before you buy a revision guide or download papers. There are five in England:
| Exam board | Specification | Code | Total marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| AQA | Biology | 7402 | 260 |
| OCR | Biology A | H420 | 270 |
| OCR | Biology B (Advancing Biology) | H422 | 270 |
| Edexcel | Biology A (Salters-Nuffield) | 9BN0 | 300 |
| Edexcel | Biology B | 9BI0 | 300 |
WJEC A-level Biology is the Welsh board's version and has its own structure. The rest of this guide covers the three English boards.
AQA A-level Biology specification
The AQA A-level Biology specification has eight topics. Topics 1 to 4 are shared with the AS, and topics 5 to 8 are A-level only.
- Biological molecules
- Cells
- Organisms exchange substances with their environment
- Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms
- Energy transfers in and between organisms
- Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments
- Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems
- The control of gene expression
| AQA paper | Topics | Time | Marks | Share | What is in it |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | 1 to 4 | 2 hours | 91 | 35% | Short and long answers, plus 15 marks of extended response |
| Paper 2 | 5 to 8 | 2 hours | 91 | 35% | Short and long answers, plus 15 marks of comprehension |
| Paper 3 | 1 to 8 | 2 hours | 78 | 30% | Structured questions, 15 marks of data analysis and a 25 mark essay |
The essay is the big difference from other boards: you choose one of two titles, and it is worth 25 marks, nearly a third of Paper 3. Every paper also tests practical skills.
OCR A-level Biology specification
The OCR A-level Biology A specification is in six modules: development of practical skills, foundations in biology, exchange and transport, biodiversity, evolution and disease, communication, homeostasis and energy, and genetics, evolution and ecosystems.
| OCR Biology A paper | Modules | Time | Marks | Share |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Biological processes (01) | 1, 2, 3 and 5 | 2 hours 15 minutes | 100 | 37% |
| Biological diversity (02) | 1, 2, 4 and 6 | 2 hours 15 minutes | 100 | 37% |
| Unified biology (03) | All six | 1 hour 30 minutes | 70 | 26% |
OCR Biology B (Advancing Biology) uses the same timings with different papers: Fundamentals of biology (110 marks), Scientific literacy in biology (100 marks) and Practical skills in biology (60 marks).
Edexcel A-level Biology A and B
| Edexcel | Paper 1 | Paper 2 | Paper 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Biology A (Salters-Nuffield) | The Natural Environment and Species Survival: 2 hours, 100 marks | Energy, Exercise and Co-ordination: 2 hours, 100 marks | General and Practical Applications in Biology: 2 hours, 100 marks |
| Biology B | Advanced Biochemistry, Microbiology and Genetics: 1 hour 45 minutes, 90 marks | Advanced Physiology, Evolution and Ecology: 1 hour 45 minutes, 90 marks | General and Practical Principles in Biology: 2 hours 30 minutes, 120 marks |

A-level Biology grade boundaries
A grade boundary is the lowest total mark across all three papers that earns a grade. The boards set new boundaries every summer to allow for how hard the papers were. These are the latest, from June 2026 (AQA, OCR and Edexcel).
| June 2026 | Out of | A* | A | B | C | D | E |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AQA 7402 | 260 | 199 | 174 | 146 | 118 | 90 | 63 |
| OCR Biology A | 270 | 204 | 176 | 150 | 124 | 98 | 72 |
| OCR Biology B | 270 | 193 | 173 | 153 | 134 | 115 | 96 |
| Edexcel Biology A | 300 | 220 | 196 | 170 | 144 | 119 | 94 |
| Edexcel Biology B | 300 | 218 | 189 | 160 | 131 | 102 | 73 |
AQA A-level Biology grade boundaries as percentages
In June 2026, AQA's A* took 199 out of 260 (76.5%), an A took 174 (66.9%), a C took 118 (45.4%) and an E took 63 (24.2%). The other boards were close: an A was 65.2% on OCR Biology A, 65.3% on Edexcel Biology A and 63.0% on Edexcel Biology B. Treat any boundary as a guide, because the 2027 figures will be different.
Required practicals and the Practical Endorsement
The Department for Education's rules say every A-level Biology student must carry out at least 12 practical activities, which count towards the Practical Endorsement. AQA calls them required practicals, OCR groups them into practical activity groups (PAGs), and Edexcel calls them core practicals.
- The endorsement is separate. Your teacher assesses it, and it is reported alongside your grade without adding to it.
- The written papers test practicals too. Expect questions on methods, variables, results tables, graphs and errors, set in the context of the practicals you did and ones you didn't.
- Keep your lab book tidy. It is the evidence for your endorsement, and the best revision notes for the practical questions.
To practise analysing results, enter a data set in the Practical Data Lab and work out means, ranges and uncertainties.
Maths in A-level Biology, worked through
At least 10% of the marks test maths at GCSE (level 2) standard or above. The same few calculations come up again and again. We wrote the questions below for this guide.
Magnification
Question: a cell is 50 µm long, and its image in a textbook is 25 mm long. What is the magnification?
The answer is ×500. Put both sizes in the same unit first: 50 µm is 0.05 mm, because 1 mm is 1,000 µm. Mixing units is the commonest way to lose this mark. Check more in the Magnification Calculator.
Surface area to volume ratio
A cube with 2 cm sides has a surface area of 6 × 2 × 2 = 24 cm² and a volume of 8 cm³, a ratio of 3:1. Double the side to 4 cm and you get 96 cm² over 64 cm³, only 1.5:1. That halving is why large organisms need exchange surfaces and transport systems. Try one from our Cell Biology course, then press Mark.
Work out the surface area, volume or surface area to volume ratio of a cube-shaped cell.

Hardy-Weinberg
Question: in a population, 9% of people show a recessive condition. What percentage are carriers?
- People with the condition are homozygous recessive, so q² = 0.09.
- Take the square root: q = 0.3.
- Use p + q = 1: p = 0.7.
- Carriers are heterozygous: 2pq = 2 × 0.7 × 0.3 = 0.42, so 42% are carriers.
The trap is starting from q = 0.09. The percentage with the condition is q², never q. Check it with the Hardy-Weinberg Calculator.
The chi-squared test
Question: a cross is expected to give tall and short plants in a 3:1 ratio. Of 400 offspring, 290 are tall and 110 are short. Is the difference from 3:1 significant?
The expected numbers are 300 tall and 100 short. Add up (observed − expected)² ÷ expected for each group.
There are two groups, so 1 degree of freedom, and the critical value at p = 0.05 is 3.84. Since 1.33 is less than 3.84, accept the null hypothesis: the difference is due to chance, and the results fit a 3:1 ratio. Always finish with that sentence in context, because the number alone doesn't earn the final mark. Model crosses in the Genetics Cross Lab, then try this question from our Genetics and DNA course.
Type the chance that a child of a random cross has a given trait.
Press Mark to have your answer marked in the Genetics & DNA course.
A-level Biology past papers
The boards publish past papers, mark schemes and examiners' reports free: AQA, OCR and Edexcel. The newest papers are held back for a while: Pearson keeps them for teachers so that at least one can be used as a mock, and releases most once they are nine months old.
Use mark schemes to learn the wording examiners reward, and the examiners' reports to see where students lost marks. When you give a past paper a grade, avoid boundaries from 2020 to 2022, when grading was unusually generous.
Common A-level Biology mistakes
- "Energy is produced" in respiration. Energy is released, and it is used to make ATP. Energy is never produced.
- "The enzyme is killed". Enzymes aren't alive. Say the active site changes shape so the enzyme is denatured.
- Describing when asked to explain. "Describe" wants what the data shows, with numbers. "Explain" wants the biological reason.
- Ignoring the data. If a question gives a graph or table, quote values from it. General answers miss the marks.
- Unit slips. Convert µm, mm and cm before you calculate, and give units with every answer.
- Rounding too early in multi-step calculations. Keep full values until the last line.
Use a daily paper as a short timed mock
Year 13 mocks run through the winter, and a full biology paper takes 2 hours or more. On the days you don't have that, sit today's Year 1 or Year 2 paper instead. For dates and whether mocks count, see the A-level mocks guide.
- Clear the desk, with a calculator and ruler, and start the timer.
- Answer every part, even if it's only the first step.
- Mark it, then read the mark scheme wording for every part where you dropped marks.
- Note the topic of each lost mark and revise the biggest one before tomorrow's paper.
