The exam is 80% of the grade and the assignment 20%, with no scaling. These figures are from the course specification valid from session 2026 to 2027, and the date is from the 2027 timetable. Until 2026, Section 1 had 25 marks and Section 2 had 75. Qualifications Scotland cut both after a survey of learners and teachers, in which many said 2 hours 30 minutes was too long. The content is unchanged.

The assignment: you research a topic, collect data from an experiment and write a report. The task should take no more than 8 hours, with at most 1 hour 30 minutes to write the report under supervision. Qualifications Scotland marks it.

What National 5 Biology covers

  • Cell biology: cell structure, transport across membranes, DNA and making proteins, proteins and enzymes, genetic engineering and respiration.
  • Multicellular organisms: producing new cells, control and communication, reproduction, variation and inheritance, transport in plants and animals, and absorbing materials.
  • Life on Earth: ecosystems, distribution of organisms, photosynthesis, energy in ecosystems, food production and evolution.

National 5 Biology grade boundaries

In 2026, on the old format, out of 125 (the 100-mark paper plus the assignment scaled to 25), an A needed 86, a B 74, a C 62 and a D 50. Of the 22,283 candidates, 33.2% got an A (course report 2026). The 2027 course is out of 100, so those numbers won't carry over. As a guide, the grading system aims for a C at about 50% and an A at about 70%.

National 5 Biology practice questions

We wrote these for this guide. Each one targets a skill the 2026 course report found weak.

1. DNA bases

Question: a section of DNA has 1000 bases, and 22% of them are adenine. How many are guanine? Answer: adenine pairs with thymine, so thymine is also 22%. That leaves 100 − 44 = 56% for guanine and cytosine, which pair, so each is 28%. Guanine = 0.28 × 1000 = 280 bases. Translate a strand in the DNA Translator.

2. Osmosis

Question: a 5.0 g potato cylinder is left in a concentrated sugar solution and its mass falls to 4.6 g. Calculate the percentage change and explain it. Answer: (4.6 − 5.0) ÷ 5.0 × 100 = −8%, a decrease. Water moved out of the potato cells by osmosis, from a higher water concentration inside to a lower one outside, across the selectively permeable membrane. Only water moves by osmosis: other molecules diffuse.

3. Inheritance

Question: in a plant, purple flowers (P) are dominant to white (p). Two Pp plants are crossed. What is the chance that a seedling has white flowers? Answer: draw the Punnett square:

Pp
PPP (purple)Pp (purple)
pPp (purple)pp (white)

One square in four is pp, so the chance is 1 in 4, or 25%, a 3 : 1 ratio of purple to white. Real crosses rarely give the exact ratio, because fertilisation is random. Try predicting the odds of a cross in our Genetics and DNA course and press Mark.

Type the chance that a child of a random cross has a given trait.

4. Speed of a nerve message

Question: a nerve impulse travels 1.2 m in 0.024 s. Find its speed. Answer: speed = distance ÷ time = 1.2 ÷ 0.024 = 50 m/s. Between neurons, the message crosses a synapse as a chemical, which takes extra time.

Common National 5 Biology mistakes

From the 2026 course report:

  • Saying other substances move by osmosis. Osmosis is water only.
  • Base pairing slips when counting the bases in DNA.
  • Repeats: setting up several dishes or tubes increases reliability. Say so.
  • Conclusions that only quote a value. A conclusion answers the aim: say how the variable affected the result.
  • Nerve messages: describe how the message travels along a neuron as an electrical impulse and crosses the synapse as a chemical.
  • Definitions: learn them word for word, such as mutation, a random change in genetic material.

Use a daily paper as a short timed prelim

Today's National 5 Biology paper covers cell structure and transport, cell division, enzymes, respiration, photosynthesis, the nervous system, hormones, the circulatory system, genetics and inheritance, white blood cells and immunity, ecology and evolution, which match most of the course. It doesn't have questions set on genetic engineering or food production, and it has no multiple-choice section. Use it alongside the official past papers, remembering that papers before 2027 are longer. For prelim dates, see our prelims guide.

Common questions

When is the National 5 Biology exam in 2027?
Wednesday 12 May 2027, from 13:00 to 15:00.
Is the National 5 Biology exam shorter in 2027?
Yes. From session 2026 to 2027 it's 80 marks in 2 hours, instead of 100 marks in 2 hours 30 minutes. The content hasn't changed.
How much is the National 5 Biology assignment worth?
20 marks out of 100, so 20% of the grade. It's no longer scaled.
How many marks is an A in National 5 Biology?
In 2026, on the old format scaled to 125 marks, an A needed 86. The 2027 course is out of 100, and boundaries change every year.
