Junior Cert mocks 2027: dates, Junior Cycle grades and how to revise

Papers reset in

Each card is today's short timed mock: 8 questions and 25 to 35 marks, marked when you finish.

When are the Junior Cert mocks in 2027?

The State Examinations Commission (SEC) runs the June exams, not the mocks, so your school sets the mock timetable. Most schools hold third year mocks after Christmas, between late January and the February mid-term break, often in the same weeks as the sixth year mocks. Many use papers bought from an exam paper company.

The official name is now the Junior Cycle, but most people still say Junior Cert. Until the 2027 dates are out, these official dates show how the year runs.

Do Junior Cert mocks count?

No. Mock results don't go to the SEC and don't appear on your Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement. The 2027 assessment arrangements say how your real results are made up:

  • The exam paper. Students sitting the final exams in 2027 don't have to complete Assessment Tasks, so the grade for these subjects is based on the exam paper only.
  • Classroom-Based Assessments (CBAs). You complete at least one CBA in each subject. CBAs are reported separately and don't change your exam grade.
  • Extra choice. The Department has confirmed that the adjustments of recent years continue in 2027, keeping the usual structure of the papers while adding some choice.

Because the exam is the whole grade in most subjects, a mock is a fair rehearsal for the thing that counts. Use it to find your weak topics while there are still months to fix them.

Junior Cycle grades: what your mock result means

Junior Cycle exams are graded with descriptors, not numbers. The bands were changed in April 2025, so the top four are now each 15 percentage points wide. Make sure your mock is graded on the new bands.

GradePercentage from 2025Percentage before 2025
Distinction85 to 10090 to 100
Higher Merit70 to under 8575 to under 90
Merit55 to under 7055 to under 75
Achieved40 to under 5540 to under 55
Partially Achieved20 to under 4020 to under 40
Not GradedUnder 20Under 20

Read the percentage, not just the word. A mock at 68% is a Merit, but 2 more percentage points make it a Higher Merit. That gap is often one question you rushed or left half done.

Higher, Ordinary or Common level

English, Irish and Maths are offered at Higher and Ordinary level, while most other subjects, including Science, have one common level paper. If you are unsure which Maths level to sit, your mock is the best evidence you and your teacher will have, so talk about it soon after.

Are the mocks harder than the Junior Cycle exams?

They often feel harder. You sit them with months of third year still to go, before you have finished the course or revised it all. Mock papers usually come from companies rather than the SEC, so the style can differ from the real thing. Treat your result as a snapshot of where you are in February, not a prediction for June.

When your papers come back, sort every lost mark into one of three piles: didn't know it, knew it but slipped, or ran out of time. Relearn the first, keep a list of the second, and fix the third with timed practice.

How to revise for the Junior Cert mocks

  1. Use SEC past papers and marking schemes. Stick to papers from the current Junior Cycle subjects, as older Junior Cert papers cover a different course.
  2. Learn the command words. "Describe", "explain" and "justify" ask for different answers, and marking schemes reward the one asked for.
  3. Science: revise your investigations. Questions often ask you to plan a test, name the variables or read a results table.
  4. Maths: show every step. Working earns marks even when the final answer is wrong.
  5. Time yourself. Practise whole papers at the weekend and short timed papers on school nights.

Use a daily paper as a short timed mock

A new paper appears every day for each Junior Cycle subject we cover: Maths at Higher and Ordinary level, Science for third year and first and second year, the Science strands on their own (Physics, Chemistry and Biology), and Coding.

  1. Clear the desk and keep only what the exam allows.
  2. Start the timer and don't pause it.
  3. Mark the paper, then read the marking scheme for every part where you dropped marks.
  4. Sort each lost mark into a pile, and sit tomorrow's paper the same way.

Common questions

When are the Junior Cert mocks?
Your school sets the timetable. Most hold them between late January and the February mid-term break.
