Grade 9 math practice exam: EQAO Grade 9 math and MTH1W practice questions

Paper resets in

The daily Grade 9 Math paper has 8 original questions worth 25 to 35 marks. It covers fractions, decimals and percents, ratio, expressions and equations, straight-line graphs, sequences, area and perimeter, angles, averages and charts, and money. Unlike the EQAO test it is written-answer, not computer adaptive, so it builds the working behind each answer.

How the Grade 9 math exam counts in 2026-27

In Grades 9 and 10, your final mark is now 65% classroom work, a 20% final evaluation, and 15% attendance and participation. For Grade 9 math, the EQAO Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics is that 20%: it counts as the written exam for MTH1W. In 2025-26 schools could weight it anywhere from 10% to 30%, so older advice may give different figures. These figures come from the Ministry of Education's September 2026 update to Growing Success.

The EQAO Grade 9 math test: format and 2027 dates

  • Format: online, in two sessions (A and B), each with two stages and designed to take about 60 minutes. It is computer adaptive, so later questions depend on how you do.
  • Questions: 54 in total: 50 count toward your result and 4 are field-test questions.
  • Strands tested: number, algebra, data, geometry and measurement, and financial literacy. You apply the mathematical processes throughout.
  • Tools: a built-in calculator and the EQAO formula sheet are in the platform, and you may also use your own scientific or graphing calculator and paper for rough work.
  • Winter 2027 window: January 12 to February 5, 2027.
  • Spring 2027 window: June 8 to June 30, 2027. Your school picks your session dates within the window.

EQAO publishes released questions on its Grade 9 math page; they are the closest practice to the real test.

Grade 9 math practice questions with answers

We wrote these for this page, one for each EQAO strand. Use a calculator where you need one.

1. Number. Work out ¾ of 2.4 plus 15% of 60. Answer: ¾ × 2.4 = 1.8 and 0.15 × 60 = 9, so the total is 10.8.

2. Algebra. Solve 3(x − 4) = 2x + 5. Then a phone plan costs $20 a month plus $0.15 per text: write the cost C for t texts, and find the cost of 120 texts. Answer: 3x − 12 = 2x + 5, so x = 17. The plan is C = 0.15t + 20, so 120 texts cost 0.15 × 120 + 20 = $38. The 20 is the starting value and 0.15 is the rate of change. Try an expanding brackets question from our Algebra course, then press Mark.

Expand single or double brackets and type the result.

3. Data. Seven test scores are 62, 70, 71, 74, 78, 80 and 95. Find the mean and the median. Which better describes a typical score? Answer: the mean is 530 ÷ 7 ≈ 75.7 and the median, the middle value, is 74. The 95 pulls the mean up, so the median is the better measure of a typical score. The Mean, Median and Mode Calculator checks these.

4. Geometry and measurement. Find the volume of a cylinder with radius 4 cm and height 10 cm. Answer: V = πr²h = π × 16 × 10 = 160π ≈ 502.7 cm³. Square the radius, not the diameter.

5. Financial literacy. $500 is invested at 4% simple interest per year. How much interest does it earn in 3 years? Answer: I = Prt = 500 × 0.04 × 3 = $60, so the investment is worth $560. With compound interest it would earn a little more, because each year's interest also earns interest.

Use the daily paper as a practice exam

  1. Open today's Grade 9 Math paper and work to the suggested time, 30 to 35 minutes.
  2. Show your steps, then check each answer is sensible.
  3. Mark it and note which strand each lost mark belongs to.
  4. In the weeks before your EQAO window, add EQAO's released questions to get used to the online format.

Common Grade 9 math mistakes

  • Multiplying only the first term when expanding brackets.
  • Mixing up the rate and the starting value in a linear relation.
  • Squaring the diameter instead of the radius.
  • Using the mean when an outlier distorts it.
  • Forgetting to convert a percent to a decimal before multiplying.

Common questions
